Sunbury – Mary Katherine (Coup) Buckles, 80, of 1133 Edison Ave, passed away Sunday, May 26, 2024 at Geisinger Medical Center, Danville.
Mary was born June 15, 1943 in Lewisburg, she was the daughter of the late Emily (Mabus) and Lee Roy Coup Sr. She graduated Lewisburg Area High School in 1962. She worked at the airport restaurant and Shell Dinner, but she spent the majority of her working life as a cook at the Mansion Nursing Home, Sunbury. Former resident of the 10th Street crew.
She was an avid football fan; a die-hard Penn State Fan and the Pittsburgh Steelers. Wednesdays Mary could be found at the Salvation Army Soup kitchen, she spent her life there. She enjoyed spending her time at the 40 and 8 and the American Legion in Montandon. You could almost always find her at a convenience store or gas station scratching Lottery Tickets. Her laughter filled the room as fast as the smell of the delicious food she was cooking. Her fire and sass could be felt for generations. She was the woman of women, and everyone’s mother, and the forever more the one and only Grammy Buckles.
Mary is survived by two sisters, Edith Barger and Slyvia Snyder; one brother, Lee Roy Coup Jr., and his wife, Mavis Coup; a sister-in-law, Patricia Coup; four children, Gail Buckles, JoAnn Buckles, Jamie Buckles Sr, and Lynn Buckles. Eight grandchildren, Amanda Hartl and her partner, John Fuller, Dustin Kauffman, Matt Buckles and his partner, Chelsea Smith, Zak Kauffman, Jason States and his partner, Elizabeth Jimenez, Wade Kauffman, Jamie Buckles Jr., and Timothy Jeirles Jr; and great grandchildren, Jaquelynn Jeirles, Kale Buckles, Brian Shaffer Jr., Alyssa Jeirles, Wyatt Buckles, and Jax Dean; as well as multiple nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, Mary is preceded in death by four brothers, Homer Coup, John Coup, James Coup, and Marvin “Butch” Coup; a sister, Darla Dunkle; sister-in-law, Kay Buckles Bennett; brother-in-law, James Buckles; former husband, Gale Buckles; grandson, Ryan Brosious; and her longtime companion, Kay Walker.
